LAKES WEEKEND

16 members and friends braved the rather damp conditions and enjoyed the weekend of walking, running (for two members), drinking, eating and shopping !

On Friday afternoon the 11 who had arrived walked to Easedale Tarn and enjoyed the only dry day, followed by dinner at the Travellers Rest later in the evening.

7.00am on Saturday saw Dick and myself enjoying a run around Grasmere Lake before the rain came. After a hearty breakfast  the main group of 11 drove to Blea Tarn and walked to Wetherlam via Great Carrs and Swirl How where we were greeted with very strong winds accompanied by driving rain that felt like hailstones on your face. After about 7 hours walking I think we were all pleased to return to Grasmere for a quick shower and a change of clothes before returning to The Travellers for a well earned pint or few and dinner !

Sunday soon arrived and the thoughts of an early morning run were soon  abandoned after looking out the window and seeing more rain.

Having endured the wind and the rain on Saturday everyone semmed happy to opt for the option 2 walk and go ‘long and low’ rather than option 1 to Kidsty Pike.

A few miles drive to Brotherswater and 13 of us set off on the gradual accent to Boredale Hause (although the last 200 to 300m was rather steep !) then along Boredale to Sandwick, returning along the edge of Ullswater. Although it rained on and off for most of the day it was mainly drizzle or very light.

A pleasant 11.6 miles which hopefully was enjoyed by everyone.

In the evening the remaining group of 13 ( 3 had to return ready for work on Monday) split up for dinner, some going to Villa Columbina or The Red Lion and some to Ambleside.

Monday morning came and with the weather not looking too wet Dick and I ventured out again at 7.00am for the usual 4 mile route up and down and around the lake. After breakfast and loading the cars 9 of the remaining 13 walked up to Helm Crag to endure more wind and rain, returning to Gramere to join the four  ‘shoppers’ for coffee. After a brief trip to Ambleside we made our way home and finished off the weekend with dinner at The Roman Way.
