The Gordon Whelbourne running week is a five day series of runs in a variety of locations in and around the Town. ‘GW’ goes back a long way and commemorates one of Newark ACs leading lights and his Wife Mary. Notfast Running Club always has a very strong presence at these events with, this year, some 25 from the Club participating and with a splendid 16 who ran all five evenings, the final event being the traditional Friday 10k, run, this year on the Old Railway Track.

Covering all five races in detail would require the publishing of a small booklet so, if your indulgence might be craved, only Prizewinners will be mentioned here…and goodness..what a fine list it makes,..try this for size

For the overall week

Men 40-49 1st Mike Bullock…(with a pb 10k on Friday)

Men 50-59 2nd Chris McDonnell

1st lady overall Joanna Pendleton received the Mary Whelbourne Trophy

Women 35-44 1st Joanna Pendleton

Women 45-54 2nd Kate Fisher

Women 55+ Marilyn Hatherley

Friday 10k

Women 35-44 1st Joanna Pendleton

Women 55+ 1st Marilyn Hatherley

Add to this four ‘Spot Prizes’ and we see Notfast walking off with about a quarter of the entire ‘Medal Haul’

Full results are here

Let’s hear it for all who took part in the weeks races and lets give a big ‘Thank You’ to Newark AC for, as ever, putting on a very fine show, and a final cheer for all Prize Winners, including one young lady who is still ‘Gobsmacked’..her identity is a closely guarded secret…Super Injunctions and all that…let’s just say that her name is an anagram of ‘Joannapendleton’

In contrast to the massed trainers that assembled for the GW Week, only one pair were to be found out in Derbyshire to take on the ‘Baslow Boot Bash,..these are Stuart Ashleys own words…over to you Stuart…………………..

27 miles starting from Baslow with lots of ups and downs about 3000’ ( well it is the Peak district) passing through Chatsworth Park, Edensor, Haddon Hall, Over Haddon, Monsal Dale, Monsal Trail, Cressbrook Dale, Eyam (avoided the plague !) Froggat Bridge, Calver, Bramley Woods (with the Rhododendrons in full bloom) and back to Baslow.

A 5 minute hailstorm in the morning followed by a 15 minute heavy shower at lunchtime ( forget the waterproofs, it won’t be much !!!) just carried on and got wet but quickly dried off when the sun came out.

Other than that a sunny day quite hot at times but very dry and ‘rock hard’ underfoot due to the lack of rain.

7 hours 32 mins and believe it or not that was exactly the same time as last year !!

7 hours 32 mins…thats effectively a days work on the hoof !…Phew !

On Saturday there was an event very close to home that deserves the caption..”If you weren’t there then you really missed out Pal “.

Fernwood was the place to be for the first Fernwood 5k Dash. This event was in Runners World magazine so very surprisingly only attracted 23 runners !

So, dial in this lot…spot on marshalling …fast course…super HQ / Bar …really lovely atmosphere, and, wait for it ..Champers and Truffles for the (many) prizewinners plus the best Goody Bag that you will ever get for belting round the block on this very tidy Two Lapper. This is a 2012 must.

Can you believe that only 5 Notfasts took part ….. and some had done all the GW races too..results read like this:

Mike Bullock, second in 16mins 24 secs

John Blundy 4th …18.49

Wyn Thomas 9th.. 21,10

Bob Oakham 12th..23.58

Pete Tatton 14th….26.52

All agreed that it was a fine, if a tad short 5k, Oakham has adjusted his lightning sub 24 to a 26 min run that is still a PB and that is probably the case for the others.

There’s more …

Sunday..19 Notfasts at a chilly North Muskham 5k. Notfasts very own John Geeson organises this event and was happy enough with the 60 odd who had pre-booked, and a bit surprised by the 47 who signed up on the day…107 for a village 5k is pretty good.

The course is no give away, it is a mix of Tarmac and off-road with a wonky camber along the Trent embankment. The course is well laid out for spectators, having two loops..(well actually 19 Loops, but they were the Notfasts). Traditionally excellent marshaling and general welcoming atmosphere make ‘Muskham’ a good-un.
