Three members took part in the Oaks in Charnwood cross country race this weekend, the event was held near Shepshed, Leicestershire.
80 other runners joined them at the starting line, most looking like experienced fell runners. Someone shouted go, and off they went, leaving just a few in the dust including our trio. They hadn’t run a mile before they had to negotiate a path across a stream then climbed a few hills and admired the scenery through the mist and rain that blurred their vision. They followed paths through woodland, crossed stiles and fields inhabited by cows following their squelchy path through a farmyard covering their shoes in cow poo. The total assent over the 6.75 mile 99% off road cross country course was approximately 800 feet.
The trio plodded on, didn’t win, but had a great time despite the rain. The trio consisted of Colin Green, Andy Pritchett and Kate Fisher all finishing together in 1 hour 17 minutes. Craig Fisher of Newark AC (Kate’s son and Colin’s grandson) also ran and finished in 1 hour 5 minutes, I am sure they must have been the only family with 3 generations running.
